In the Line of Duty: Dangers, Disasters and Good Deeds

'Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.'

"The history of America's postal service is filled with stories of those who risked their lives for the mail. The events of September and October 2001 have brought the courage and strength of these workers to light again.

'In the Line of Duty: Dangers, Disasters and Good Deeds' is an exhibition dedicated to America's postal workers. The exhibition opened at the National Postal Museum on October 8th, 2003."

Emily Post—Holiday Tipping

"The holiday season is the perfect time to say “thank you” to those who have provided service to you throughout the year—to let them know you’re pleased with what they do for you. Don’t forget that one of the best ways to express your appreciation is a hand-written note, which should accompany any holiday tip."

Cenoté

"East of the major Chichén Itzá ruins is a dark underground world the Mayans called Cenoté. They are deep water filled sinkholes formed by water percolating through the soft limestone above. Since the porous soil held little water, these underground bodies were extremely important to the city. A visit to one is a spine chilling experience. Entry is through a vertical hole with narrow stair steps carved by the Mayan's themselves. The air is thick and musty. One misstep on the slimy ledges threatens to send you falling over 20 feet."

THE LEONIDS: King of the Meteor Showers!

"LATE EVERY AUTUMN around November 18th, in the still, silent hours before dawn, dedicated meteor watchers have long kept a vigil.  In the cold, early morning darkness the sky glimmers with a preview of early spring constellations. The Leonid meteors at their peak are capable of producing the grandest display of celestial fireworks known to man.  For about an hour or so the heavens seem to burst open and pour forth a deluge of shooting stars.  The spectator stands agape, his mind numbed, his eyes dazzled, and his soul thrilled by the sight of shooting stars appearing by the hundreds . . . perhaps even thousands per hour.  The Leonids historically are active between November 14th and 21st.  The source of the Leonids was first identified in 1866 by the Italian astronomer, Giovanni Schiaparelli (of Martian canali fame)."

Numbers Stations

"For more than 30 years the Shortwave radio spectrum has been used by the worlds intelligence agencies to transmit secret messages. These messages are transmitted by hundreds of “Numbers Stations”.

Shortwave Numbers Stations are a perfect method of anonymous, one way communication. Spies located anywhere in the world can be communicated to by their masters via small, locally available, and unmodified Shortwave receivers. The encryption system used by Numbers Stations, known as a “one time pad” is unbreakable. Combine this with the fact that it is almost impossible to track down the message recipients once they are inserted into the enemy country, it becomes clear just how powerful the Numbers Station system is."

GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache."

ACT, GRE, SAT, Free Test Prep

"Number2.com was founded by professors and graduate students who wanted to make high quality test preparation universally accessible. Vin Crespi, now a professor of physics at Penn State, launched a preliminary version of the site in 1995, but it was in 2000 that Vin joined forces with Eric Loken and Josh Millet to form a company and undertake a comprehensive site redesign. Eric and Josh, who were at that time pursuing doctorates at Harvard, had taught free SAT courses in inner-city Boston and seen first hand the demand for test prep from students who couldn't afford to pay the fees charged by traditional test prep companies. Delivering test prep over the internet, at no charge to students, was the best way to reach as many students as possible. Number2.com is able to provide its courses for free because of the generous support of its sponsors: mostly Universities and student loan companies."

Amusing Flanedotes

"Amusing Flanecdotes

In El Salvador, flan is called flan de horchata because it is made with a milk-based almond drink sold across the country.

The Mexicali Blues Cafe in Teaneck, New Jersey makes flan flavored with kahlua and laced with pomegranate seeds.

On April 11, 1994, Taste It Presents, a company in Kenilworth, New Jersey that makes prepackaged foods sold at gourmet shops, released four frozen confections including flan in its 'Desserts Espanol' series.

Attention travellers. Dining out and eating flan? In Sacramento, California, flan will cost you $3.50 at Tortola's or Bull Market. Paella's in Washington D.C. will charge you $2.75."

Project Gutenberg's Distributed Proofreaders

"This site provides a web-based method of easing the proofreading work associated with the digitization of Public Domain books into Project Gutenberg e-books. By breaking the work into individual pages many proofreaders can be working on the same book at the same time. This significantly speeds up the proofreading/e-book creation process.

When a proofer elects to proofread a page of a particular book, the text and image file are displayed on a single web page. This allows the page text to be easily reviewed and compared to the image file, thus assisting the proofreading of the page text. The edited text is then submitted back to the site via the same web page that it was edited on. A second proofreader is then presented with the work of the first proofreader and the page image. Once they have verified the work of the first proofreader and corrected any additional errors the page text is again submitted back to the site.

Once all pages for a particular book have been processed, a post-processor joins the pieces, properly formats them into a Project Gutenberg e-book and submits it to the Project Gutenberg archive."

Current Electoral Vote Predictor 2004

"Welcome to Electoral Vote Predictor 2004, which tracks the electoral vote (EV) state by state. In 2000, Al Gore won the popular vote by over half a million votes but George Bush won the electoral vote by 5 votes and became president. Thus watching the electoral vote is more important than watching the national polls. This website is dedicated to tracking the electoral vote by examining the state-by-state polls. As new state polls are released, the maps, spreadsheets, tables, graphs, and movies will be updated. In the maps, the white states are essentially tossups and are subject to rapid fluctuations. The magic number needed to be elected is 270."

The Electoral College

"The current workings of the Electoral College are the result of both design and experience. As it now operates:

Each State is allocated a number of Electors equal to the number of its U.S. Senators (always 2) plus the number of its U.S. Representatives (which may change each decade according to the size of each State's population as determined in the Census).

The political parties (or independent candidates) in each State submit to the State's chief election official a list of individuals pledged to their candidate for president and equal in number to the State's electoral vote. Usually, the major political parties select these individuals either in their State party conventions or through appointment by their State party leaders while third parties and independent candidates merely designate theirs."
