Safe Drunken Dialing

"Safe Drunken Dialing, its a fairly new and growing issue and we here at slackertown are tackling it head on with booze in hand. We've taken the liberty of setting up a number (321) 600-1200 for whenever the drunken dialing urge takes a hold of you. Whatever message you leave will be added to the slackertown web site so when you sober up you can check back see just how drunk you were."

Portrait of the Man in Your Life

Still life becomes a portrait when the picture of a used Swiffer pad, a slice of pumpkin pie, or a cabbage, each with the face of the man in your life superimposed on it makes it so.

The Biology of B-Movie Monsters

"Size has been one of the most popular themes in monster movies, especially those from ... the 1950s. The premise is invariably to take something out of its usual context--make people small or something else (gorillas, grasshoppers, amoebae, etc.) large--and then play with the consequences. However, Hollywood's approach to the concept has been, from a biologist's perspective, hopelessly naïve. Absolute size cannot be treated in isolation; size per se affects almost every aspect of an organism's biology. Indeed, the effects of size on biology are sufficiently pervasive and the study of these effects sufficiently rich in biological insight that the field has earned a name of its own: 'scaling.'

In The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), the hero is exposed to radioactive toxic waste and finds himself growing smaller and smaller. He is lost to family and friends while fending off the household cat and must make his own way in a world grown monstrously large. He forages food from crumbs and drinks from puddles of condensation. In one famous scene, he defends himself against a house spider by using an abandoned sewing needle, which he has to struggle to lift."

Tropical Islands Resort - Pleasure Dome

In Brand Germany a new indoor resort called Tropical Islands is housed in what was originally an airship hangar. The dome contains sandy beaches, thatched huts and a blue fresh-water lagoon. The Tropical Islands dome has a ground surface of 66,000 square meters. With a length of 360 meters, a width of 210 meters and a height of 107 meters, it is large enough to hold 8 entire soccer fields. Even the New York Statue of Liberty (93 meters) could stand upright in it, and the Paris Eiffel Tower (322 meters) could lie in it. The Dome offers enough space for the skyline of Berlin's Potsdamer Platz including the Sony Centre, the Gatehouse and the Daimler Chrysler skyscraper.

The World Wide Panorama

"Another edition of the World Wide Panorama project was released on New Years Day, January 1, 2005. This is a collaborative effort by 193 photographers from 38 countries, each contributing one VR panorama. These remarkable computer images allow a 360° view, letting you look in any direction, including straight up and down.

The theme for this event was "Sanctuary", a term allowing for many interpretations. The participants show us sanctuaries as diverse as the tops of tall buildings, a farmhouse kitchen, snowy forest scenes and cozy cafes. There are great cathedrals and simple roadside shrines, a chapel in a cave, temples, mosques, monasteries, memorials, and cemeteries. Also libraries, artists' studios, urban parks, greenhouses, and a hermit's cave. We see wildlife refuges, shelters for birds, cats and pigs, a park readied for disaster, a protesters' encampment, temporary housing for the homeless, a man living under a freeway overpass, and a Maserati showroom. The scale runs from a child's crib, to a miniature Nativity scene, to the Eiffel Tower, and an all encompassing view of the earth from over the Indian Ocean."

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project

"Initiated by the Atlanta-based The King Center, the King Papers Project is one of only a few large-scale research ventures focusing on an African American. The King Papers Project's principal mission is to publish a definitive fourteen-volume edition of King's most significant correspondence, sermons, speeches, published writings, and unpublished manuscripts. The published volumes of The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr., have already influenced scholarship and become essential reference works. Building upon this research foundation, the Project also engages in other related educational activities. Using multimedia and computer technology to reach diverse audiences, it has greatly increased the documentary information about King's ideas and achievements that is available to popular as well as scholarly audiences. The Project also offers unique opportunities for students to become involved in its research through the King Fellowship Program."

Columbia Law Library Music Plagiarism Project

"This website comprises hundreds of documents (texts, scores, audio and video files) associated with music copyright infringement cases in the United States from 1845 forward. These documents have been collected and edited by Charles Cronin, a librarian at Columbia Law School, who is also responsible for all commentary and analysis in this site. The Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning is providing ongoing assistance with the digitization and organization of the materials in this site.

The purpose of this project is to capitalize on the distributed nature of digital information systems to collect, organize and distribute graphic and audio materials associated with music copyright infringement cases in the United States from the middle of the nineteenth century on. This documentation, especially for cases over twenty-five years old, is difficult to obtain and has never before been systematically collected or published in print or electronic format. Our goal is to accumulate and publish a complete collection of music copyright infringement opinions, comments about the musical works they consider, and graphic and sound files of relevant portions of these works.

Plagiarism per se is not grounds for a tort claim; one sues for copyright infringement based on an alleged plagiarism. While many instances of plagiarism are not actionable under copyright law, we use this term because it has long been associated with the broad notions of wrongful appropriation and publication as one's own of another's expression that are at the heart of these music copyright disputes.

We hope too that this project will prompt inquiry into the question of how digital music technologies, notation software in particular, might be used effectively in analyzing and arguing music copyright infringement disputes."

The Graphing Calculator Story

"I used to be a contractor for Apple, working on a secret project. Unfortunately, the computer we were building never saw the light of day. The project was so plagued by politics and ego that when the engineers requested technical oversight, our manager hired a psychologist instead. In August 1993, the project was canceled. A year of my work evaporated, my contract ended, and I was unemployed.

I was frustrated by all the wasted effort, so I decided to uncancel my small part of the project. I had been paid to do a job, and I wanted to finish it. My electronic badge still opened Apple's doors, so I just kept showing up."
