Step 2: Make the Base

Form the strip of metal into a ring with a diameter of 60 cm. The ends of the strip should overlap by approximately 4 cm.

Make 2 small holes in the metal and pass wire through them to attach the ends together.

Place paper or a grain sack on a floor which is level and hard. (A concrete floor is ideal.) It should also be placed in the shade and be protected from the wind. The paper or sack will prevent the base of the container from sticking to the floor.

Place the metal ring on top of the paper or sack.

Fill the metal ring with a mortar made of 1 part cement and 2 parts sand, using the minimum amount of water. To fill the metal ring with mortar, you will need approximately 3 litres of cement (fill a 1 litre container 3 times) and 6 litres of fine sand (fill a 1 litre container 6 times).

After filling the metal ring with mortar, cover it with a wet grain sack and leave for 24 hours (1 day). The sack should be kept wet during this time.

The next day, remove the metal ring and save it for making the next container base.
